Deborah A. Shapiro, LLC
Deborah has been practicing employment law for nearly 25 years. Prior to founding her firm in 2004, she practiced at boutique and large law firms in New York. Throughout her career, Deborah has worked with domestic and multinational employers in a wide range of industries, as well as in the not for profit, unionized, and public sectors.
During her years working at law firms, Deborah advised management on nearly all facets of the employment relationship, litigated labor and employment matters in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies, and conducted workplace investigations. She has addressed a multitude of issues throughout her career, such as discrimination, harassment, retaliation, bullying, traditional labor matters, independent contractor classifications, employment agreements, wage and hour disputes, reductions in force, and others. Over the years, Deborah cultivated and honed her counseling and litigation experience to develop a special expertise in conducting fair, thorough, and informed workplace investigations.
Deborah has been an adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law since 2007. Every spring, she teaches a semester-long course on negotiations to second and third year law students. From 2008-2017, she also taught practicum courses in negotiation and mediation each semester.
In addition to teaching in the law school setting, Deborah has over two decades of experience conducting large, small, and one-on-one training sessions for executives, managers, and staff on workplace issues such as diversity, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
Deborah serves as an arbitrator for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (Finra), the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and the Joint Committee on Fee Disputes and Conciliation. She previously arbitrated for the National Association of Securities Dealers, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Civil Court of the City of New York. For many years, she served as a hearing officer for the Office of Labor Relations of the City of New York and for various municipalities in disputes involving Civil Service Law and General Municipal Law issues.
Deborah has mediated employment disputes for over 15 years. In addition to mediating by private engagement, she mediates for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She previously mediated for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 2015, she was appointed to the Mediator Advisory Committee for the Southern District of New York and served an extended term.
Deborah has been selected, each year since 2017, by Super Lawyers for excellence in the area of employment and labor law. She also has received awards and recognition for her academic work. She has been active in industry and alumni organizations and invited to lecture in higher education, at industry conferences, and on panels.
